After the flood all the colours came out...

It was a beautiful day. Don't let it get away.

You know the irony of drought is that every time you hear about it, it rains. So is calling a drought the modern version of a rain dance? Does this make meteorologists no better than some crack-pot shaman? or ode sit make them superior because they can actually get it to rain? Either way I'm sick of the rain.
Yup in the last month we've had 3+ inches of rain. YIKES! The beauty of the rain is how clear it is after. Starting Monday it cleared up, now we have 75 and sunny. The ocean looks so gorgeous. I think in some ways it's worse because now I have to fight the urge to not work and instead play outside or ride or go surfing. Oh well, I guess you win some and you lose some.

On an unrelated note-

Thanks Shane for my new favorite BuzzBite Ya picture. This trumps anything you could ever take during the ride.

The Star of India (& other fun things)

Okay, so this summer Chris and I are going on the infamous pioneer trek. Yeah, yeah, pretty much everybody did that when they were 15 or whatever. But what's cool is that we get to go as a Ma and Pa. And since it is such an ordeal to go to Wyoming from San Diego, our Stake is making the most of it. So we get to experience 'just what the handcart pioneers did'. Starting from the time they left England.

Last Saturday we got to go visit the Star of India, a sailing ship kind of similar to that which the pioneers sailed on. This is us with the Star of India in the background.

To see the Star of India, you buy a ticket to the San Diego Maritime Museum which includes several boats including the HMS Surprise, which was used in the filming of the movie "Master and Commander."

This is Chris steering the ship into battle.
This is me actually steering the ship from below deck.

Below is Chris's favorite part of the museum, the Russian sub.

So this is one of the coolest symbols I think I've ever seen. Don't get too close or lightning will come out of your head and hand (who knew?).

The Happiest (?) place on Earth

Ahh yes Disneyland. I know it was a week ago we went but I finally decided- cause I guess Lish won't- to talk about all the joys and entertainment that can be had. For those of you who may not know Alicia and I are Disneyland Addicts. The Rides? Yup. The Freaks? Yup. The Costumed Characters? Yup. Parades? Yup. Mickey pretzels (esp the jalapeno cheese filled ones- the cream cheese aren't bad either)? Yup. Hot Chocolate in a mug to end it all? Yup. We could live there if they'd let us. So anyway back to the case at hand. It was 11:00 AM the park and only been open for a couple hours when we stumble across this:

WOW!?!? Really- it's only 11:00 AM. And this guy was OUT! I walked up nice and close to snap this. There were people all around, food being served 10 yards from this guy, heck this is outside a store and across from 3 rides, and a huge children's attraction. So my only 2 questions are this?

1) HOW? How do you stay asleep like that?

2) WHY? What on Earth has led you to this point?

Back for more

So this was once on the blog- I think I lost it when I was trying out new backgrounds. I'm just gonna link to the other blog that has posted:

Do's and Don'ts with the newborn

I highly recommend the whole book.
Man what more can I say.
BTW- I prefer "introducing the child to pets" myself.

New-New Car

It's really hard for me to get the title right. It needs to be read with a pause after the first new. Not two fast news, that just sounds ridiculous. So anyway...We bought a new car...see a couple posts ago. When we bought it, the assistant manager and sales manager that sold it to us apparently knew nothing about the product they were selling. So, as a result, they promised us a lot of things (air conditioning, cruise control, stereo w/audio jack, and new rims and tires). These features were not on the car when we bought it but we were assured that they could be added without difficulty. WRONG!!!!! Apparently the model we bought accepts none of said features, at least not without great difficulty. But they promised!!! (Besides the fact that we had already paid for said features...) So at this point we had 3 options...1)They would just reverse the whole transaction and give us our old car back...hmmmm nope, that isn't going to work, one of the main reasons we bought the car was because you took our old one... 2) They could find a way to get most of the said features put on the car (with great cost to them)--which isn't perfect but hey, most is better than none right? or- 3) They could find another car at another dealership and try and trade it so we could switch. That definitely sounded like a winning option.
So they tried. And tried. And tried. Or so we thought. Apparently through this whole process it was very important for us to be standing in front of them. We saw absolutely no progress-none- unless we were at the dealership in their faces. GRRRRRR! So they finally found some acceptable cars (with all said features, from the factory) We told them the priority order and the next day (IT'S A MIRACLE...) we heard that our #1 choice was good to go and that someone was going to go get it. (it'll be ready tonight or tomorrow for sure...)This is Friday morning. We don't hear anything else the rest of the day. We try to call--he's busy, he's not here, he's cutting a deal, he's too busy. WHAT!?!?!?! Just because you already sold me a car does not mean I'm not important! TALK TO ME!!! But no. So we again have to make an appearance at the dealership. And the guy is REALLY annoyed that we did. The car just got here, he tells us, and will be ready tomorrow afternoon for sure. No problem. We tell him we'll call around 2:30 the next afternoon he says great it will definitely be ready. So we called the next day at 4. He's busy. He's cutting a deal. REALLY? So, when he doesn't call us back...we show up again. Oh, uh, ummm...the guy didn't come in today that takes care of it. Sorry. SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? At this point, it's me (nice, calm, Alicia) that's mad. REALLY mad. So when he tells me that it will be ready tomorrow I find it really difficult to believe him. So I look him in the eye and ask...And what if it's not? What do I do if it's not? He's starting to feel a little guilty now, and replies, I'm not going to answer that question because it will be. So I look at him again as my eyes fill with tears and say, What if it's not? and walk out. Apparently, I should have yelled and cried 3 weeks earlier. Maybe it would have been resolved that much sooner. Because, as I have noticed on several occasions, crying works. The next day my car was finally ready. Finally. And yes it includes all said features, including being a manual transmission, plus a spoiler and fog lamps. (Wahoo!) But it is the same kind of car, in a steeley blue color and it's official name is Blue Steel... But I love it...and I'll probably never ever ever ever ever in my whole life buy a brand new car ever ever ever again.

Pretty sure I had more posts than this....

I could have sworn that in the last two weeks I'd posted. Well in my mind I did. So I'm not gonna talk about the whole car situation, I figure Alicia would/could cover that. I'll talk about the non-exciting, like friendly get-togethers. So the long story-short is when we lived in Logan we never knew a quiet weekend because we always invited everyone over. It was great- nothing better than me (Chris) ruining the solemn evening of Sunday by scoring crazy points in Quiddler spelling Sex Toys. Hey it's not my fault that every time I get the same three letters in my hand. So fast-forwarding to present- it's been a long time since we've had so many things going on with people that we don't get "down time." In fact, I can't remember the last time we got together with people so frequently. Now this sounds weird like a pity party, or some sort of heartfelt post of times past, or neat intervention now- it's not. It is a post of me observing that hey I remember how it was, and now it's kinda happening again. That's all. We've been to Brian and Erin's a couple times, Jeff and Kate's, became jealous of the Foster's place, finally got to see the Cook's house, had a slightly over-done RockBand party- who knew that 14 was too many for our apartment? It's been great. Now, however is the downside- I'm tired, and my house is a mess again. Oh well, it's worth it. Now if you're reading this in UT or ID: think back on any Sunday night you randomly showed up at the Townhouse and just start laughing, cause you know something funny will come to mind. If you're reading this is San Diego: think of the fact that Brady absolutely wanted to play, "Don't Fear the Reaper." Wow I never would have pegged Brady as a BOC fan- just goes to show you they're everywhere. On second thought maybe Brady just had a fever and every knows the only cure is, "More Cowbell."

Just can't get enough, just can't get enough

This was supposed to be the spot that I was gonna post pix and such from one of the RockBand/chaos parties we've had recently. Too bad that isn't gonna happen anytime soon. In the mean time I'll just tell you what addicted means- addicted is when Alicia is jonesing to play a game. Period. Anything that can make Alicia turn on the Xbox is pretty addictive, plus on top of that she gets the mic and instruments out. I love my wife, I hope she doesn't think this is meant to tease her, I'm just observing how addictive RockBand is some days. Oh, and on a good note we have opened up all of the songs so that means I can get my "Learn to Fly," fix anytime I want. So on a different note, I should inform everyone that the car woes continue. Hopefully we'll get it all fixed sooner or later. Oh yeah, and I am trying to figure out how to balance life, because now that Alicia has been recalled into RS, and suddenly I am doing more bishopric stuff than ever, I think I'm gonna lose it- oh yeah and we're still training for the Ride the Rockies bike ride this summer. Anywho- later. Yeah and maybe I'll get some pictures up someday.

FFF and Rockband Saturday...

Whew! Can't get enough! There is nothing better than getting together, making fun of others, laughing at each others mistakes, and generally creating mayhem. This weekends havoc was brought to you in part by Alicia (she does all, what more can I say), XBL, Mountain Dew, and the letter Q. Why Q you ask? Cause you just can't QUIT!!!
Yeah it was a little crazy around our place this weekend- I convinced/suckered some friends into some late night CoD4, man that was great. Nothing better than mayhem on that little trailer depot. Then for even more entertainment we went to Blairapalooza- Brian and Erin (friends of ours) hosted a house party that included excessive amounts of RockBand and GH2/1.
So then we decided it's time to finally get that party we've been planning off the ground. So it happens THIS COMING SATURDAY- RockBand Saturday at the Larson's - now with a bit of SingStar to help warm up the vocals. This ought to be good.
Now for all of you who can't make it- know this- you're still invited and YES you can spend the night if you can make it down here.
Until then...
...on a steel horse I ride, and
I'm Wanted (wanted) Dead or Alive (dead or alive).

Chris

PS the hope is pix and/or vid so keep close cause you may just end up being A) Famous or B) Infamous- hey it's a good way for people to live vicariously

PPS It's gonna have to be a BYOD cause I am NOT providing enough for everyone.

New Car!?!?!?!

Yes...we got a new car. A brand new car. I'm not sure what to do with a brand new car. Why? Well, our Cavalier that we've been driving for the last three years had seen better days. Being hit 3 times in as many years is not usually good on cars, go figure. Anyway, we'd been having brake, body and wiring problems on it for some time. Which under ideal circumstances would be fine. Chris would be able to fix those seemingly minor problems. But since we don't live in ideal conditions (for that anyway...see Chris's Christmas in Paradise post for further details), it makes it both difficult and expensive. So we weighed our options. See what we could get as a trade in with the Cavalier. Buy a new car and sell the Cavalier. Try and work out a way to fix the Cavalier. So we went to the nearest Chevy dealer, just to see what they had. Here's what we found.

So its not what any of you ever expected us to buy. Yeah well, we never saw that either. But it's amazingly roomy. So roomy in fact that when Chris gets in he still has at 6" of headroom- yeah for him! And we both miss driving a stick shift. And it wasn't a whole lot of money, especially when the dealer offered us a killer trade in deal. Oh yeah, and its really fun to drive! So now we have a new car, what we do next will remain to be seen...

Win the War on Terrible

Terrible video games that is. Yup this is gonna be a postmortem thought on suckiness in video games, pop culture, and oh yeah how much I love Call of Duty 4. Why postmortem- well see besides being dead to the "hip" world, I am also finally done with my first play through of CoD4. So in the idea of after-the-fact reviews and thoughts I figured I'd offer advice to anyone with a gamer in their life (be it them or anyone they know, family or friend)- if they like any kind of action game that provides some brief moments of intensity, and has you actually feeling bad for the loss of life, lets you enjoy a diversity of types of game play (yeah I know it's FPS, but trust me there's more to it - AC-130's rock), and maybe wants to dip their toes in the ocean that is multiplayer gaming this is THE GAME to BUY! I loved it, yeah the single player campaign is ONLY 15 hours or so (if you like to play on the harder difficulties), and it is some of the best enjoyment I've had in a long time. Then there's the MP aspect, something I really like. Yeah I know it's not for everyone, but I like being able to get a friend or two together and go crash some other party, win or lose you'll still progress in the rankings. Then when you've played enough (about 4-5 hours or so total online) you'll have all sorts of crazy options opened up to you. You like customizing your guy? Yeah perks is where it's at: I love to run around with the bomb squad option, bullets that penetrate walls (yeah you can finally shoot through crates and sheetrock), and usually a nice steady aim. Others I know - ahem, Dave- like to do the whole "Last Stand;" you get shot, you're down, no big deal, you get one last clip with a pistol to make that dirtball pay for sneaking up on you. It's always funny to watch. What more can I say than I love the game- on a 1-10 scale we'll go 9.4- there's always room to improve- namely Co-op.
So now how bout that whole dead to pop culture: enough with celebrities AND enough with American Warble, I know you can't sing, I get it, you have no class, and no shame, yes I can see, great. Or maybe you're a washed up TV actor, yes you can't dance, I know, so please, please don't make me keep watching you struggle. I think I must be dead to the "hip" world. I hate hearing about stupid celebrities and their lives, they got lucky and can act for millions of dollars, so what why should I care? They lead awful lives, are bad influences to younger people, and have had more spouses and ill-gotten children than Sodom AND Gomorrah combined. So WHY, WHY, WHY should I spend time and money following the lives of these people? I just don't get it.
Last on the rant sheet: Suckiness in video games. Yup it exists big time- best example: CoD4- wait, what? you said you loved it?- yeah but they yanked the Co-op at the last minute, why? Another classic example the whole Rock Band-GH3 fiasco with PS systems- what? you want us to pay you to let the consumer use your controller? are you MAD? last but not least- bad games in general that cost a lot of money. Why isn't there a bottom standard to which all games have to meet- I'm not talking about liking a game or not I'm talking about playability- meaning is this glitch-free enough to finish? Ironically this ties in to a game I just finished playing- Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. Loved the idea of Sands of Time (Read more here) played through it in a week. Then the inevitable TRILOGY effect set in (see previous rants for more on how I feel about this). The second game sucked. It even had glitches where you had to start the whole game over (we're talking 15-20 hours into it). C'mon! Really? Oh yeah and the whole of the game was just bad- they decided to take the fun out of the original and inject combat and brutal challenge instead, oh yeah and a whole lot of skin- just what I didn't want. I would have been ok with the changes except they're broken- there are parts that literally don't' work and crash the system, or you run into imaginary walls that don't exist? What? Yeah suckiness in video games hurts us all. Fortunately, I didn't have to waste money to find these flaws a good friend of mine was nice enough to let me suffer through his copy. But it's crap like this that hold games down to the main crowds. Alicia would NEVER, EVER have kept going with the game like I did, and millions of others would/did quit, leaving mad parents and angry consumers. So am I special, well yeah, I kept going, but does that make me special? No. It just means I remember how brutal NES games were- saves? yeah right! Continues? no way! redo the whole thing again? Yup!
So yeah- so say no to celebs, trash in pop culture, and of course sucky video games.

Chris

I live in Paradise- I wish I could just remember that everyday!

You know I always hate to pay rent, I always hate to fill up the car, I hate that I can't work on my cars, I hate the cost of food, clothes, etc., etc.. Then a day like today comes along- December 24th- right in the middle of winter, Christmas Eve, source of so many songs ("White Christmas," "Rockin' around the Christmas Tree," "Jingle Bells"), longing of snow- and yet as I went to work I noticed that crystal blue sky and the need to wear sunglasses. PARADISE! Sun, 75, costal breeze, not a cloud in the sky, palm trees swaying, beaches filled with people, PARADISE. Yeah it sucks in the day when I have to look out the window and see the great weather I miss working in the lab, but its days like today when everyone I know is enduring blizzards and ice, and I am in shorts and flip-flops and happy as can be. Just goes to show you happiness CAN be bought, you just have to be able to afford to live in San Diego, and hopefully have time to enjoy it.
Fortunately for me I have a few days off and I fully intend to enjoy the very thing that Alicia and I take for granted.
The other great part about paradise: New traditions to be formed: Yup you heard it here first- Lish and I have a new Christmas tradition (well technically a Christmas Eve tradition) Wienerschnitzel for Christmas Eve dinner. Yup chili dogs and $0.99 chili cheese fries burritos (don't ask, they're just great), wash it all down with a cold Dew Float. Best part about it? All enjoyed while staring at the setting sun, while wearing shorts, hoodies, and flip-flops. Yup only in paradise can you start Christmas traditions that involve shorts, flip-flops, and hoodies.
Oh and for all of you who are enjoying the snow: Merry Christmas, and enjoy the cold!

Christmas in San Diego

Okay...so Christmas in San Diego is not quite the same as it is in Utah. For one, there's no snow. But we've been able to start some traditions of our own, being here for the second year in a row without family. So yesterday I baked. I made some awesome sugar cookies. I'm a sucker for soft cookies and I found a recipe last year that puts every other sugar cookie recipe to shame. Anyway...we had Jason and Elise over to play some Wii and gratefully, Elise helped me to decorate the million and a half cookies I baked.

Last year, we finally got our own real sized Christmas tree. Last year we were fortunate enough to have my parents here to decorate it with us, but this year it was up to us, and so naturally, it took a little longer. But Chris's parents this year got us a tree skirt to match our Mickey and Minnie stocking we got last year. Here are some pictures of our final tree this year:

Little Help from Our Friends...

I'd like to shout out to all who take the time to read and send us/me feedback on the blog- it's the only way that I can convince Lish to keep posting to it. As a New Years resolution I intend to try and post a ramble at least once a week- usually it will resemble a rant (just on a smaller scale). Sometimes I'll post up what I'm playing in the Video Game realm...OR I may even post up a bit of my research- but only, only if you promise to behave. Otherwise, I'll turn this post around and go home. So please, if you are a visitor- frequent or not, feel free to post up in our comments- be heard. Just know that if you flame or spam me I will hunt you down and force you to do things that will make your mother and children cry - most of them involve having to play THIS GAME (btw- gotta love any game that gets that good of a review).

So thanks for the support and hope to see you around.

Chris

We finally took some pictures!

But they're not posted yet. Sorry.
In accordance with my goal from a couple weeks ago, when we went to Disneyland for Thanksgiving with Chris's parents, we definitely took our camera. We (meaning Chris) took quite a few pictures, most of them not of us, but we did manage to get a few with one or both of us. I'll post up a couple of my favorites. Disneyland was all decked out for Christmas...so now I can't wait to get my tree up and what few decorations I have out! Be patient for the pictures...they really are coming, but we (meaning one of us, probably Chris) have to convert them to jpeg format and graze through the massive number that we (meaning Chris) took.

I'm calling to provide you with an update...

And by update I mean I'm calling to tell you the same thing I've told you 5 times before: "I need to get more information (from my end) before I can get an answer for you." And by more information I don't mean from you (the consumer whom I called) I mean from us the provider of service (and the initiator of this call). Does this make sense to you? Yeah me neither. Let me tell you a little story of the black box that couldn't and the company called Micro$haft (names have been changed to protect the guilty).
As most of you may know my loving wife bought me an Xbox 360 (BTW 360 = number of hours I have now spent trying to get my console back). She opted to buy me the nicest of the consoles the one that was called Elite (suggesting that it may be better than the "standard"). Well after a few months of happy use- not excessive by any stretch (I'm thinking of all night parties with my Nintendo- man that thing never could die- still hasn't in fact 20 years later and plays most reliable of all), it died. Fine, I got the Red Ring of Death (google it- it's ingrained into American Gaming Lexicon). So I called M$ who closed WHILE I was on the phone. So I had to call back- fine. I called in on Monday October 1st, at 6:30 AM (yeah I got up that early just for that), I was helped promptly by a fine young man who said I would be receiving a box to ship it back to M$ in about 4-5 days (AKA Friday at the latest). Away we went willing the box here faster- Friday the 5th came and went and no box- OK I guess I'll call Monday. Monday's call nets me the following: UMMMMMmmmmmmmm I don't know how this system did this but.... we never got your request for a box... we have your call we just didn't ship the box- huh!?! Fine, ship me a box NOW, please. So I wait again.... yup 4 days later it gets here (that would be Thurs., Oct 11th). I rushed home and packed my console in the box and voila! Shipped! Sweet so they told me it takes no more than 10-12 business days to look over the console and either A) Fix it (unlikely) or B) Ship me a replacement (likely). So I watch UPS.com anxiously tracking my box every step of the way... HOORAY it arrived- signed in at 10:56 AM on Tues Oct 16th. Sweet so lets say it takes 12 days past that...carry the 3...add 2...subtract for gravitational pull...count Halloween as a holiday and.... yup, should be getting an answer NO LATER than November 2nd. OK I'm ok with that I've got lots to do. So on November 3rd I start to get worried and I start calling. First I get some people who tell me that it seems to have taken a bit longer- huh? Fine, I'll wait. By the start of next week I'm mad, I want an answer, so I do what anyone should do, call back. Now at this point I'm not gonna go into details, but sufficeth to say I have called at least 25 times, spoken to 10+ supervisors and at least, 20 first line helpers. I have also e-mailed 3 times.
See here's the problem THEY DON'T KNOW DIDDLY! They can never help me, I have been transferred/referred to the "Call Back Team" 3 times and have gotten 5 total call backs from 3 distinct groups. All with the answer seen at the start: Umm we don't know why, it shouldn't take this long. Their latest is "We don't have any replacement consoles in- fine FIX MINE instead."
I've asked for refunds- umm well we can't do that, I've asked for a reason that is has taken this long... uhhh we don't have one. I have asked for a manager... uhh we don't have one that speaks to people.
So now I am just PISSED! Yup I said it- I'm so mad that every time Xbox calls I yell, and yell, and yell. - On a side note they don't like it when you ask them personal questions about what they PERSONALLY are gonna do and they REALLY don't like it when you use their first name e.g. "What are you doing, David, to ensure that my console is being fixed?" Also I have found that rhetorical questions that often point out grammatical or contradictory statements that they make seems to really make them not like you.
I'm now a hostage of Micro$haft for 45 days- if only they'd send me a ransom to tell me how I can be released from their stranglehold-like grip. Better yet- if only they'd just give me a real answer.
So all I can say at this point is how much I hate this situation- it's not about video games, I've got plenty of those to play, it's about how my expensive investment in technology is now the laughing joke of M$ and how they seem like they're really just out to get me.

How many cameras does it take?

So I was bored tonight and thought I'd update our blog. Hmmm, I thought, I'll put up some new pictures. And then I realized, I don't have many pictures of Chris and I. Its not for lack of cameras, we have about 9 or 10. We just don't take pictures of each other or us. Maybe its because neither one of us really likes being in pictures, but I miss having them to look at. Or maybe its because we always forget to take the camera when we go places or forget to get it out when we take it. I guess some of that comes from the fact that I don't feel like we ever do anything exciting. But, looking back over the last few years...I know we've done stuff, but I have nothing to show for it. So, here's my goal. We have an amazing digital SLR camera. My goal is to take pictures of each other or us together at least three times this holiday season. I know it doesn't seem like much, but when you've got nothing to show for three years...a couple times in a couple months could make a difference. That's my goal. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully by the new year I have some pictures, just in case someone looks at my blog.
